You may have heard of them through word of mouth and buzz on the web, this contender has been working hard at it since 2001. “Everything you see in my bags is the result of feedback on the original designs,” proudly states Chris Anderson, founder of Gorilla Boy Disc Sports. The bags that we received were handmade by Chris, yet are nicely polished. For this review, we tried out two of the company’s products: the Primate Series Chimpanzee in blue and Evolution Series Kong in classic camouflage.

The Chimpanzee is from the company’s standard line yet does not look or feel standard in any way. With an internal frame system, quad-straps attachment points, several spacious pockets, a fourteen- to-sixteen disc capacity as well as room for two putters in the front putter pocket, the Chimp has more features than most mid-sized bags. The Kong, on the other hand, is the biggest bag in their fleet. It easily holds an impressive twenty discs in the fully accessible main compartment. Additionally, there is plenty of storage on this bag. In fact, with all of the storage available on Kong, you’ll have your camera, disc retriever, open bar, and paparazzi at all times.

The field evaluation: These bags are very well thought through. The putter pocket is deep, keeping them securely in place. The rain cover zips right over the main disc compartment and then fastens down over the putters with a Velcro flap, making it easy to open and close quickly. Each bag had multiple quad-strap fastening points and fully open main compartments. I had no trouble accessing any single disc even with the bag on my back. Finally, the bottle holders have a solid bottom to retain cans and smaller bottles, but do not have any sort of drain hole; a small issue, and definitely not a deal breaker at all. These bags were popular with locals—a couple of fellas wanted to trade right on the spot. Highly durable and strongly recommended. If you are looking for a new bag, and you want one that stands out from the crowd, I would definitely look at what Gorilla Boy’s got first. You can only buy them direct, and prices range from $35 to $110, plus shipping and handling. You can see all of them online, but will need to call for available colors.
